Running shoe lifespan calculator

Estimate when to inspect your running shoes using their current mileage and your typical week. Choose road or trail to get a relevant wear checklist.

Where do you usually run?

Enter your current shoe mileage and a typical week to estimate when this pair may reach the usual inspection window.

This is a mileage guide, not a shoe health score or a replacement rule. A common lifespan guide is 480–800 kilometres; shoe model, running style and conditions all matter. Check how the shoe looks and feels.

A mileage guide, not a fixed expiry date

Many running shoe guides put a pair’s typical lifespan around 300–500 miles (roughly 480–800 kilometres). That range is only a starting point: shoe design, running style, terrain and use all affect wear. The calculator estimates when your weekly mileage may reach that range; it cannot measure cushioning, fit or physical condition. See ASICS’ guide to how running shoes wear and Brooks’ signs it may be time to replace a pair.

Running shoe lifespan: common questions

How many miles do running shoes last?

Around 300–500 miles (480–800 kilometres) is a common rule of thumb, not a guarantee. Check the manufacturer’s advice for your model and pay attention to how the shoes look and feel as their mileage grows.

When should I replace my running shoes?

Start inspecting them as they approach the lower end of the guide. Look for worn tread, a compressed or creased midsole, damage to the upper, or a change in comfort or support. Mileage alone cannot decide when a pair is finished.

Does running surface affect shoe lifespan?

It can affect where wear shows up. Paved surfaces can wear outsole rubber, while trail running puts more emphasis on lug grip and upper condition. Terrain varies, so this calculator keeps one broad mileage guide and changes the inspection tips instead of applying an unsupported surface multiplier.
